Do you podcast? Are you looking for a way to make your show notes easier to create and manage? If so, then you should consider using an episode footer! In this blog post, we will discuss what an episode footer is and how you can use it to make your podcast show notes easier to create while following best practices. We will also provide some tips on how to make the most of this handy tool!

What is an episode footer?

An episode footer is a simple block of text and links that you can insert into your show notes automatically for each episode of a podcast feed. Hello Audio’s Universal Footer for episode show notes has been available to all users since 2021. Buzzsprout released an episode footer feature to their users in late 2022. Hopefully other podcast hosts include this useful feature for their podcasters soon.

The footer will automatically appear in all your episodes, including previous ones. Any new episodes will automatically adopt the footer at the end of the show notes. Think of it as an email footer with sender details used in all episodes.

It is a great way to save time when creating show notes, and it also helps to ensure that you are following best practices for podcasting, gaining traffic to your valued links like your website and social media pages.

How can I use the episode footer?

To use an episode footer, simply paste your links and text into the footer text box of an episode. Be sure to replace any placeholder text with the actual links and content you’d like to share. Typical content includes links to:

  • Your podcast website
  • Youtube channel
  • Twitter account for the show and/or its host(s)
  • Instagram
  • TikTok account

You can also include frequently used calls to action like: “Thanks for listening!” “Leave us a review.” “Share with your friends.” etc.

What are some tips for using the episode footer?

Here are some tips for using an episode footer:

– Be sure to use https links to any webpages. Some apps like Spotify won’t allow clicking unless the links are to SSL encrypted pages. http won’t be clickable links.

– Include the full webpage URL rather than hyperlinked text. Some apps won’t click through hyperlinks unless the full URL is shown. E.g. “Visit our homepage at https://helloaudio.fm” instead of “Visit our home page.

– If you have the text saved in a text note for yourself, be sure to paste as plain text to ensure the formatting is not messed up when pasting. Usually this is done by holding Shift while pasting. Apple Notes are especially bad at formatting text in a universal way.

Should you edit old episode show notes?

Yes, it’s worth the time to go through old episodes and remove the text you’re including in the footer. If you have an extremely long back catalog, or just don’t want to spend time on editing each old episode, you can task it out to a willing family member for a bit of extra allowance money 🙂
